My personal opinions only :-

The autorefractor is a great tool to use for refracting the eye but it is not 100% accurate. Sometimes it is accurate to the point, but many times it is only used as a guide. You may have to adjust the readings by trial and errors. Sometimes it is useful because it can give the axis of the astigmatism more accurately than by manual testing, but it is not always correct.

The patient’s old axis is more suitable to wear. Hence, it is very important to have the old reading before testing. If without the old record, the patient may not know whether the new axis or the old axis is better and clearer . Maybe a high end autorefractor may be more accurate than a low end one.

Some newbies depend only on the autorefractor for their prescriptions which is very flawed. Normally, the power from the autorefractor maybe too high or 100% accurate. the patient may not feel comfortable or relax wearing that prescription. It has to be confirmed with the manual trial and errors and bi-vision testing to get the accurate results.
