Cheap readymade reading glasses are beautiful but not lasting
Cheap readymade reading glasses are not for long time use. They can only be used for temporary wear only. Wearing for an extended time may damage your eyes. Thus, it is unsafe to substitute it for a prescriptive glasses.
👓 Roadside Ready-Made Glasses: Pros & Cons
✅ Possible Advantages
- Low cost: Very cheap compared to prescription glasses.
- Quick fix: Can provide immediate relief if you just need magnification for reading.
- Accessibility: Easy to find without needing an eye exam.
- Cheap readymade glasses can last if you take extra care.
❌ Major Drawbacks
- No personalization: They are “one-size-fits-all” and don’t account for your unique prescription.
- Unequal lens power: Both lenses usually have the same strength, but most people’s eyes differ slightly.
- No astigmatism correction: If you have astigmatism, these glasses won’t help.
- Poor quality lenses: Can cause eye strain, headaches, or blurred vision.
- Hidden eye problems: Skipping a proper exam means conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, or diabetes-related eye issues may go undetected.
- Cheap readymade glasses have the same power on both sides and hence are unsuitable for those eyes which are not the same.
🧾 When They Might Be Okay
- If you only need temporary reading glasses and have no known eye disease.
- As a backup pair for short-term use.
- For emergency situations when you can’t access proper eye care.
⚠️ Best Practice
- Get an eye exam first: Even if you buy cheap glasses, you should know your prescription and eye health status.
- Invest in proper lenses: For long-term use, prescription glasses are far better for comfort, clarity, and eye health.
- Think of health, not just cost: Your eyes are delicate; saving money upfront can lead to bigger problems later.
✅ Summary: Roadside glasses can be a quick, cheap fix for reading, but they are not a substitute for a proper eye exam or prescription lenses. If you use them long-term, you risk eye strain and missing serious conditions.

Whether you are buying those cheap readymade glasses from the shop, roadside vendors, night markets or online, you should order with caution. You only have one pair of eyes and if your eyes are damaged, you have no one to blame but only yourself. Many people just buy a pair and use it daily. It is cheap and losing it will not cause them any worries. Some very cheap types are harmful for the eyes because the lenses have distortions or are uneven in thickness like a distorted mirror.
There was a case of a person who bought a + 2.00 diopters reading glass and at the end of the year he had to buy a +4.00 diopters reading glass. There will be no return for him, back to +2.00.
There was another case of a person who told me that after his cataract operation, the doctor advises him no need to waste money ordering an eyeglass from the shop but can buy that readymade cheap type from the night market. It was very shocking to hear that coming from the mouth of an eye specialist. It could be heresy and I don’t know if it was really what the doctor told him.
Under certain circumstances, you may use those cheap readymade glasses, like welding, dirty works or gardening, grass cutting, lawn moving because you fear your expensive glasses may get damaged, chipped or scratched. You could have forgotten where you put your eyeglasses and may need to wear those cheap readymade glasses for the time being.
If wearing those cheap readymade glasses does not give you any side effects, then you may wear it for an extended period. However, on a word of caution, it is better not to be stingy or love money. Get your eyes tested by the Optometrist/optician for a good quality reading glass which can lasts longer than those cheap readymade one’s.
