How to Stop Myopia Progression in Children | Wichita
To reduce myopia progression in children with a prescription of -1.75, consider early intervention with specialized lenses, outdoor activities, and regular eye check-ups.
Early Intervention is Key
- Start Myopia Control Early: Research indicates that myopia progression is fastest in younger children, particularly between ages 6 and 12. Initiating myopia control treatments as soon as myopia is diagnosed can significantly slow its progression. 2

Treatment Options
- Specialized Lenses:
- Multifocal or Bifocal Glasses: These lenses can help reduce eye strain during near tasks and may slow myopia progression. 2
- Ortho-K Lenses: These are specialized contact lenses worn overnight that reshape the cornea to improve vision during the day without glasses. They have been shown to reduce myopia progression by up to 50%. 2

- Atropine Eye Drops: Low-dose atropine drops can effectively slow myopia progression in children. They are typically prescribed for children aged 8 to 15 and can reduce progression by up to 78%. 2

Lifestyle Changes
- Increase Outdoor Time: Encourage your child to spend at least 90 minutes outdoors each day. Exposure to natural light and distant objects can help slow myopia progression. 2
- Regular Breaks from Near Work: Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, have your child look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain. 1
- Maintain Proper Working Distance: Ensure that your child holds reading materials or screens at a proper distance (about the length of their forearm) to minimize strain. 1
- Good Lighting: Ensure that your child has adequate lighting when reading or doing homework to prevent eye strain. 1

Regular Eye Check-Ups
- Monitor Progression: Regular visits to an eye care professional are essential to monitor your child’s vision and adjust treatment plans as necessary. Early detection of changes in myopia can lead to timely interventions. 2By combining these treatment options and lifestyle changes, you can help manage and potentially slow the progression of myopia in your child. Always consult with an eye care professional to determine the best approach tailored to your child’s specific needs.

My personal opinions only:-
These days with the internet age in the modern era, it is very difficult to control the progression of myopia in children. Many children are addicted to the handphone, tab, internet cafes and computer ,spending countless hours starring at those gadgets.
The parents are left powerless and in a hopeless situation. Sometimes it is so easy to pacify a tantrum child by giving them the handphone for them to watch movies ,You-Tube or play the many addictive games.
Knowing the consequences of starring at those bright screens, we should try to enforce the limits and boundaries of using those gadgets for the sake of our children’s eyesight. Otherwise, they will have to wear high prescriptive and thick lenses for their whole life and suffer from poor visions.
Encourage the child to play more outside the house with your supervision and see distance objects to stop the progression of their power. Today, it is not very safe to let children play outdoor alone as danger lurks everywhere.
We cannot stop the progression of myopia completely but we can slow down the rate of progression by going outside more, lessen screening time and taking vitamin A for good eye health. When a person becomes shortsighted, the power will progress for the second year and may stabilize on the third year.
